Our Trip to the UniverSoul Circus

Great acts, great music, great time!

This past Sunday, the hubs, the kid and I had the opportunity to attend the UniverSoul Circus.

From their website…

“Our show is a highly interactive combination of circus arts, theater, and music that spans genres including Pop, Classic R&B, Latin, Hip Hop, Jazz and Gospel. It embraces and celebrates the unique and familiar aspects of pop culture globally by bringing them center stage with a cast of international performers. UniverSoul Circus is rated as one of the top three circuses in America.”

Even though the kid was coming down with a cold (symptoms presenting at the show), we all had a wonderful time.

What I really love about the UniverSoul Circus is that almost all the acts are minorities and most of those are Black. I love having opportunities to show the kid that – despite what he sees in mainstream media – WE can (and do) do anything we set our minds to. Even if it’s not the “norm.”

I want him to know that HE can do anything he sets his mind to… even join the circus.

Now on to the show: We’re going to do this G.B.U. style…

The Good

The acts: The acts included an improv troupe, clowns, acrobatics, Russian swing acrobats, tigers, elephants, aerial ballet, hip-hop dancers and Caribbean dancers. The kid really, really, REALLY loved the hip-hop dancers/gymnasts.

The music: The music included really current pop, hip-hop, R & B and old school R & B – a little something for everyone. And, everyone loved the music. I mean, at what other circus do the attendees do the “Cupid Shuffle” in the aisles during intermission?

The Bad

The smell: I know we were at the circus, but P.U.!

No cameras: No cameras?! Seriously? How am I supposed to do a blog post, without taking any pics? Thank goodness, my photographer husband rocked it out, even with just having his smart phone handy.

The Ugly

The music: Remember how I said was current? Well, that included a few not-so-kid-appropriate choices. Wholly inappropriate songs about guns, drugs, sex, etc. NOT COOL. The circus is supposed to be a family affair, right?

The “ugly” aside, we really had a great time at the UniverSoul Circus. Especially the kid. It took his love of music, tumbling, dancing and made it into one awesome show.
