First Day of Kindergarten – What Really Happened

The honest-to-goodness true story, of The Kid’s 1st day of kindergarten…

  • 7:00 a.m. The Kid is up & talking. A lot. I think he’s excited. The Hubster & I – although amused – are not impressed. Especially The Hubster. He’s so not a morning person.
  • 7:30 a.m. He’s now singing Animal by Neon Trees at the top of his lungs – using his toothbrush as a microphone. Again, while its super cute, we are not impressed.
  • 8:00 a.m. He asks, “Is it time to leave yet,” for the 16th time.
  • 8:30 a.m. He asks, “Is it time to leave yet,” for the 38th time. Seriously. He won’t stop talking.
  • 8:45 a.m. We finally leave, to take him to school. He’s excited, the entire ride (a whole 5 minutes) there. We get there, and he’s still excited. Until he sees all the kids and parents. He begins to look a bit unsure and overwhelmed. His eyes are as big as saucers.
  • 8:55 a.m. We’re all standing in line, waiting for the doors to open, and the kids to be let in. Shout out to the woman, in front of us, singing “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” She’s probably the real reason I didn’t cry. I was too busy laughing at her.
  • 9:00 a.m. We walk him to the door of his classroom, wish him a good day and kiss him goodbye. He doesn’t seem phased, anymore. Hopefully, everything goes well.
  • 9:30 a.m. On the freeway, on my way to work… wondering how he’s doing, what he’s doing, if he’s okay.
  • 10:00 a.m. At work… wondering how he’s doing, what he’s doing, if he’s okay.
  • 10:30 a.m. At work… wondering how he’s doing, what he’s doing, if he’s okay.
  • 11:00 a.m. At work… wondering how he’s doing, what he’s doing, if he’s okay.
  • 11:30 a.m. At work… Oh, you get the picture. My anxiety/curiosity carried on, throughout the day.
  • 6:40 p.m. Finally, I arrive to pick him up, from the afterschool program. I ask him how school was, and he’s less than forthcoming. But, I did finally get some sort of response out of him. All that talking he did this morning, and now he chooses to be quiet.

Here’s the video, of the response I finally got out of him…

And, here are some pics  from the big day…

How’d your kid’s first day back go? Let me know, in the comments.
